Butterfly

Butterfly

Incredible. Strictly a transactional conversation

with watery, windy words,

and then,

with the suddenness of colour,

he opened his mouth

and out dropped a butterfly.

Flapping absurdly, coated in saliva,

untamed (and perhaps untameable)

but nevertheless a spectacular specimen,

a butterfly of a certain calibre.

Somehow he was no longer himself.

his lips became flowers of prayer

and his face a bough of beauty,

us half-dead with awe and jealousy,

not knowing whether to clap or to cover our ears

and cry.

Shakily at first, but then sedately, the butterfly

took off –

with its nose up in the air.
