The Poetry of Nonsense – 18.2.15

Chomsky achieved a work of poetry when he was outlining his thesis about linguistics, writing ‘Green Ideas Sleep Furiously’. This poem celebrates the poetry of nonsense by attempting to coin something as seemingly meaningful and artistic, but by incorporating patterns of rhyme to structure the piece:


flabby rust must hit the dust

when sparrows mark blue shine

gospel lies sandwiches prize

at mend of night shuffles send

bolts sing violence greenly

symptoms ambulate keenly

meant cotton meanly

in key wraps mirrors

shade pulls rivers

last the scissors

prove photograph screws

excuse led the news

tabulate minus divides nine

brain the fabulous mine
